Like a Baby: To Be Born Again
By Deb Walker

At the tender age of thirteen I had an abortion, and a few months later I attempted suicide by overdosing on antidepressants. After my parents divorced I quit high-school and, at seventeen, became a teenage mom.

A year later I was pregnant again by a different man. I underwent another abortion, but this time I was not put to sleep. It was extremely painful and one of the loneliest times in my life. Once again I tried to take my life. However this time I ended up in a state mental hospital.

One of my counselors there cared enough about me to ask her church to pray for me. She and her church family remembered me in prayer for over four years, though I did not realize it at that time. After several months though I ran from this place and continued my journey for love.

It seemed I had nothing and no one; not even a home. So I hitch-hiked out of state. In order to support myself I worked in nightclubs as a stripper. Soon I was addicted to alcohol and drugs.

At one point I actually thought I was making a life for myself, but what I really was doing was ruining my future.

After two years it got so bad that I frequently found myself in the emergency room; each time thinking this could be my last breath. I was so close to death so many times. I had not slept well for months; my diet consisting primarily of drugs and alcohol. Once after trying cocaine laced with embalming fluid, I lay in a hospital bed, begging the nurse not to leave, because the fear of death was extremely strong.

At one point I asked the nurse to take a walk with me down the hall. As the nurse and I reached the end of the hallway, we came upon the maternity ward. I peeked in and saw such beautiful newborn babies.

I did not grow up in a Christian home, I did not know who God was. But as I looked at the babies, within my spirit I so wanted to become like a little baby; new and without sin! I believe God heard that silent yearning in my soul.

Later, after being discharged from the hospital, I drove to my mom's house. She had not seen me for a long while. During all this time she had been taking care of my daughter. When she opened the door I was four months pregnant with a broken nose and weighed 100 pounds. I told her I needed help. She let me in and called a women named Sue. Sue was aware of my past, because she attended the church that had been praying for me. Sue contacted the pastor and they both came over and met with me.

Pastor Bob shared the good news of Jesus Christ with me. God that day answered my silent cry and my prayer. He made me like one of those little babies; a new creation in Christ. To this day He continues to work in my life.

Through much prayer, Jesus blessed me with a healthy baby girl in spite of the many drugs I took. On Christmas Day I also got my older daughter back; what a wonderful gift!

God began a great work in me. He not only forgave me, he delivered me from drugs, alcohol and smoking. As I continued to seek him and pray, He once again blessed me with a wonderful Christian man. We united in marriage last year when I was 24 years old.

I must confess that it has been a long road for me, but I pray that my story will touch many who are praying for friends or family. Please understand that no matter how bleak it seems, no one should ever give up on seemingly hopeless people like me, because I am a living example of prayers that God answered!

In Christ I have found forgiveness, which has allowed me to forgive myself. And today He holds my family -- my babies -- in his hands. He is a loving, forgiving and faithful God!

And it is His desire to change people's lives today. I know because He changed my life completely! Like a baby, I have truly been born again.
You are forgiving and good, O Lord, abounding in love to all who call to you. Hear my prayer, O Lord; listen to my cry for mercy. In the day of my trouble, I will call to you, for you will answer me.
Psalms 86:5-7.

This is what the Sovereign Lord says: I will sprinkle clean water on you, and you will be clean; I will cleanse you from all your impurities and give you a new heart and put a new spirit in you.
Ezekiel 36:22,25-26

So from now on we regard no one from a worldly point of view. Though we once regarded Christ in this way, we do so no longer. Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; the old has gone, the new has come! All this is from God, who reconciled us to Himself through Christ.
